Resumo
The high incidence and aggressiveness of hepatocellular carcinoma has a global impact on public health. The low efficacy of conventional chemotherapy combined with adverse effects and resistance have encouraged the search for more effective treatments with more selective alternative drugs. Medicinal plants contain substances derived from secondary metabolism of high therapeutic potential, especially for the treatment of cancer. In Brazil, the genus Myrciaria O.Berg (Myrtaceae) is among the groups of plants most used for food and medicinal purposes. Its therapeutic potential is attributed to high molecular diversity, with different active compounds. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic potential of the aqueous, ethanol and hexane extracts of Myrciaria sp. against human hepatocarcinoma cell line (HepG2). Cell viability was performed by MTT method and cytotoxicity was assessed by Trypan blue exclusion method. In both assays, the aqueous extract showed no activity against HepG2 cell line. In contrast, ethanol and hexane extracts showed cytotoxic potential, with IC50 123.9 and 86.4 μg/mL, respectively. Further studies are being carried out to better evaluate the pathways and mechanisms of these extracts.
