The use of popular culture as a teaching and learning tool allows the approximation between theory and reality, encouraging the student to become an active interpreter and a better analyst of his own world. Understanding International Relations through literary fiction is a way of creating a parallel with reality that allows students to make their own interpretations and apply them to the events observed in the world. Thinking about these possibilities, this article seeks to analyze International Relations in light of the events of the American gods of Neil Gaiman, relating the main theories of International Relations - Realism, Liberalism, Gender Theories, Constructivism and Postcolonialism - with the facts presented through the paper. Using popular culture, the monograph investigated whether the use of fantasy worlds and fictional characters could be a form of teaching in the face of the themes proposed by International Relations theories and whether, in fact, this learning could be applied to the events that permeate the scene International. It is argued that the exercise allows for a deeper understanding of the theories and the contemporary international system, since it promotes the understanding of the fundamental themes and concepts of the discipline through the breakdown of everyday teaching practices and the offer of new ways of seeing the world.
