Introduction: Breastfeeding is a unique and surprising moment, which is why it ends up becoming a journey that presents challenges. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the factors that led women to not exclusively breastfeed their babies. Methodology: This is a cross sectional, exploratory and descriptive study, with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through the questionnaire developed by the researcher, in September 2023. Results: After data collection, the responses were analyzed according to Bardin's Content Analysis (2016), two thematic categories being constructed: 1) " Lack of guidance on exclusive breastfeeding after birth" and 2) "The factors that influenced the decision to give up breastfeeding". The results reveal that the age of pregnant women varies from 24 to 56 years old and their education ranges from incomplete primary education to completed higher education. All pregnant women reported some difficulty breastfeeding. Furthermore, the majority reported not having received guidance on exclusive breastfeeding, even though they had participated in prenatal consultations. Conclusion: Given the results obtained, it is concluded that with this work it was possible to recognize that women feel the desire to breastfeed, knowing its relevance, but the problems presented in the study demonstrate what leads to giving up.
