INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, it is a process in which there is a degeneration of the articular cartilage, increasing the friction between the bones and heading to local inflammation. Osteoarthritis affects mainly elderly people, especially in hands, knees and hips joints, but can appear since young age. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the serum levels of Rheumatoid Factor and C-Reactive Protein of university students, correlate the results with the answers obtained in questionnaires. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one university students participated, 43 women and 8 men. RESULTS: Twenty two (22) participants reported having osteoarthritis family history, 19 reported having already injured some joint and 10 participants reported having some infirmity. However, it was obtained only one altered dosage of CRP and all dosages of rheumatoid factor were presented with normal values. CONCLUSION: Both CRP and rheumatoid factor are non-specific exams. It is likely that the lack of altered results occurred because the observed population was young adults, which are not usually the age group affected by osteoarthritis.
