This paper presents an overview of the United Kingdom’s trade balance during the governments of Margaret Thatcher, Sir Tony Blair and Boris Johsnon. Based on the challenges faced by each prime minister during their terms, along with the international events from each time, the development of this study was deemed necessary. For this purpose, the trade balances of each government were identified, alongside a qualitative overview of the international and domestic events that impacted the volatility of this economic indicator. Given the complexity of each of the three periods, a mixedmethod methodology was employed, with both quantitative and qualitative methods to integrate data with the international events. On the other hand, the liberal theory of International Relations – focusing on Joseph Nye and Robert Keohane’s studies on interdependence, Adam Smith’s economic liberalism and international political economy– was chosen to facilitate the understanding of each government’s decision making processes. This study sought to comprehend both domestic and external factors influencing the trade balance over three distinct periods. It also underscored the importance of relationships and cooperation as means to strengthen political and diplomatic ties.
