Abstract
The job market is constantly undergoing significant changes. Consequently, professionals, in an attempt to keep up with these transformations and enhance their skills sets, are faced with the possibility – in some cases, the need – of pursuing a dual career. In Brazil, there are articles that address the situation of women, which is often marked by unpaid domestic work alongside their professional activities outside the home. Other examples include healthcare professionals working shifts and student-athletes. However, no studies were found that specifically examined this subject in the field of accounting. Therefore, this research aims to identify the profile of professionals with a background in Accounting Sciences who simultaneously work in two careers: the accounting field and teaching practice. The research was conducted in the municipalities of Caxias do Sul, Lajeado and Santa Cruz do Sul, through an online questionnaire distributed to professionals. The obtained results were subjected to descriptive analysis. The survey revealed that professionals working in the accounting field are generally not interested in teaching, primarily due to financial reasons and the lack of professional recognition. Furthermore, professionals engaged in dual careers reported feeling fatigued and stressed in their daily lives; however, a smaller portion of respondents expressed gratitude and determination in their career paths. Among the main findings, it was observed that most professionals opted for a career solely in the accounting field. As for those who pursued both careers, they admitted to being more satisfied with their work in the accounting field than in teaching; nonetheless, they expressed admiration for the teaching profession. The results highlight the challenges faced by professionals with a background in accounting sciences in their careers trajectories, while also confirming theories discussed in the existing literature regarding the competencies required for each profession.
